The term narcissism refers to the set of traits that coincide with ‘self-image ego’ and ‘egotism’ as a whole. Healthy and rational narcissism is existent among all individuals; however it is generally used to denote a negative connotation. Facebook as well as other social networking sites have designed themselves to make it more acceptable for our society to become exceedingly narcissistic. Through social networking sites, people have become increasingly consumed with self-importance, vanity, and conceit. Entitlement is prevalent among narcissists, causing them to hold an unreasonable expectation of particularly favorable treatment. ‘Status updates’ portray the desire for automatic compliance among many people because they deem themselves as uniquely special. It’s discouraging how easily lead, ignorant, and self-absorbed the general public has become.

Living among a world of narcissists:

I think you're taking Facebook a little too seriously, bud. I have one and I personally am not narcissistic in any sense. I'll agree that the world has become increasingly obsessed with itself, but have you ever considered that some of that isn't narcissism, but maybe self-confidence? There are a lot of people who get dismissed for being self-absorbed, when really they're just people who are comfortable with themselves. Also, even if facebook status updates may look like it's people trying to be like HEY LOOK AT ME, PAY ATTENTION TO ME, AGREE WITH ME, I'M IMPORTANT that isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it raises people's self-esteem to feel as though people are paying attention to them/listening to them. Like I said, facebook isn't a really good example for what you're trying to get apart I think. Generalizing things isn't good.
